Our first day at San Cristobal cont...

Blogger did not let me add to the previous post so I uploaded it and will now finish.

After we got settled in at the Casa de Mama hotel we walked 2 blocks to the historic center of the city and walked around. We later saw a tourist trolley so we bought tickets and had a hour long ride around the center. This city is known for its colonial buildings and for the revolutionary fervor among the indigenous people. This area explodes in deadly anger against the government every so often and right now there is a protester's tent city set up in the zocalo with "government assassins"(in Spanish of course) spray painted on the walls of the downtown government buildings. We are not worried as the area is very busy with tourists and the protest is very peaceful.

We booked a trip to the ruins of Tonina for tomorrow. This pyramid site is not as well known as Palenque and is not on most tourist routes but I wanted to see it and we did eventually find a tour that gives us up to 4 hours on site. It is  a three hour drive each way but doesn't leave until 8 A.M. so we will get a good nights sleep we hope.

Even though we ate supper already (at 4:30 ) we are going back down town later this evening to watch folkloric dancing at a restaurant near the zocalo.

The photo below was taken from the door of our room looking back out to the patio where I am writing this.
