This day was a hi-lite day beginning with a 4 AM(!) pickup at the hotel
We headed out onto the same highway we took yesterday and 270 topes (and 2 1/2 hours later) we were at Ocosingo (near yesterdays Tonina pyramid visit). We stopped for a gross breakfast buffet (absolutely "yuck" for both Caro and I).
Our first sight seeing stop was a place Caro had wanted to see for many years,Aguas Azules. This is a river that is a beautiful blue colour and is a series of cascading falls. We climbed up to the beginning of the falls and at one point Caro went swimming in a designated swimming area.
We were two hours there before we moved on to our next stop which was a waterfall called Mizol-ha. The driver recommended we order our meal from a nice restaurant there and it would be cooked while we visited the falls. We walked to the falls (and behind them). When we returned we ate one of the best meals we have had in Mexico this trip. Absolutely wonderful fish
Next we went to Palenque. We had been there before (on our honeymoon) and I really wasn't thinking it would blow me away but, having learned our lesson in Tonina about getting a guide immediately we (along with another couple) split a $70 cost and had a FANTASTIC english speaking guide who really was great and told us many interesting things about the culture. I was able to ask him about another site I like called Labna and he had info on that. It turns out that we are lucky in our timing at Palenque as in 5 months a special recently excavated tomb we saw is going to be closed for public viewing (it has mercury in the tombsite). This tomb is the mother of the leader who's tomb we entered in 1983 (the findings inside that tomb [ named Pakal] are in the Anthropology museum in Mexico City and is no longer accessible by the public).
We were on our way home about 5, arriving back at 10:30 P.M. Boy is that a long day!
